My father worked his entire life, even through his childhood. His Mom passed away when he was just 5 and his Father unfortunately was battling demons so my Father, along with his two sisters had to fend for themselves. Let’s just say they were forced to grow up fast! When he was 15, he got hired on full time at a Ranch as a farm hand and horse trainer, for jockeys to ride. They provided him with a room, food and a hot shower every day along with $200 a week pay, and that was a lot of money back then. This is where he learned his work ethic and discipline towards hard work. Along with his lifetime love of animals and he had many.

His kindness and “help not hurt” approach to life , along with his work ethic made him a valuable young man. Three years later, he began his career with Ontario Hydro in 1968, at the age of 18. He knew that a trade was the way to go.

He stayed on with Ontario Hydro until a job offer came from Mississauga Hydro, now known as Alectra in 1976, so off to Mississauga we went. I was only 4 at the time but I have so many fond memories of this time of my childhood.

In 1977, my father had a dream to build a business that would leave a legacy for his children. Drexler’s Tree Service. A little acorn of an idea which he planted, cultivated, nurtured and protected. He worked hard. This man I knew, loved and respected wanted nothing more than to grow a business which he could eventually leave in the hands of his children.

From the mid-seventies to the early eighties; recession took hold and forced so many people to re-evaluate jobs, housing; even grocery shopping.

My Dad; James Drexler; made the decision to sell the business and all its equipment while choosing to focus on the Hydro and rightfully so at the time; great trade, pension and sustainability. He put his dream on hold.

Acorns do not simply die. They can lay dormant and for many years this one did. Until now.

DREX Property Care Services is the new growth, the new branch; the renewed dream that sprung from my father’s vision.

With his guidance in life and inspiration after death; I am passionate about growing a business that not only provides excellence, professionalism and quality; but one that also centres around the individual. You. The client.

Our mission statement; ‘People need to take care of each other; that’s the biggest, important thing’; those were the last words my father said to me before ALS took his voice. He passed away on December 14th 2015; that day is forever etched in my memory. Not simply because it was the day I lost the greatest man I ever knew; but because on that day; my father’s dream and vision implanted in me and waited until I was ready to embrace it.

The lessons he taught me and that I live each day; kindness, honour, respect, hard work, care; are the same attributes I bring to this company; to my company.

I would not put my name to anything less than I believe in. I would not put my father’s name to anything less than I believe in.
